The details of Koi no takinobori ryu kakuto karate competition rules.
(Here are the extracts from "Hokutoki" karate open competitions rules)

  1. The winner is revealed on the base of:
    1. one-blow victory (ippon);
    2. victory on the decision of the board of referees and judges: the decision is accepted if supported by not less than 3 judges out of 5 in every of three cases;
      1. yuko victory(on advantage in efficiency)
      2. waza-ari victory (on advantage in skill)
      3. victory in case of the opponent's disqualification or retirement

  2. One-blow victory is declared:
    1. as a result of an upper (jedan), middle (tudan), or lower (kadan) blow:
      1. there is a knock-down during 10 sec;
      2. the opponent is not knocked down, but does not demonstrate any desire to continue the bout (the term "absence of desire to continue a bout" is applicable when a sportsman is standing right in front of the opponent and is not holding both fists at the face level);
      3. the opponent is not knocked down and the absence of desire to continue the bout does not take place, but during more than 10 sec misses one-sided purposeful attack without active responsive actions;
      4. as a result of application of a locking or strangulation technique, recorded by the judges, the opponent signals his submission by:
        • shouting "Maitta!" or "I give up!";
        • knocking two or more times tatami or the other sportsman's shoulder or any other body part.

  3. Waza-ari victory (skill) is declared:
    1. as a result of an upper (jedan), middle (tudan), or lower (kadan):
      1. there is a knock-down during 3 - 6 sec;
      2. there is not a knock-down, but the opponent demonstrates the absence of desire to fight for 6 - 10 sec (but not longer);
      3. the opponent is not knocked down and does not demonstrate the absence of desire to fight, but during 6 -10 sec he misses one-sided purposeful attacks without active response;
      4. he misses a series of 2 or more accented blows, which have reached the objective and made obvious harm.

  4. Yuko victory (efficiency) is declared:
    1. as a result of an upper (jedan), middle (tudan), or lower (kadan) attack:
      1. there is a knock-down during 3 sec;
      2. the opponent is not knocked down, but demonstrates the absence of desire to fight during 3 - 6 sec;
      3. he is not knocked down and does not demonstrate the absence of desire to fight, but during 6 sec misses one-sided purposeful attack without active response;
      4. after any effective throw which has reached the objective and made harm;
      5. and also if the opponent receives "gantan" (a point loss) for violating the rules.

Comment 1: Combining the yuko (efficiency) mark, waza-ari (skill) and ippon (one-blow victory) marks, we can introduce the following chart:

Opponent's condition

Yuko (efficiency)

Waza-ari (skill)

Ippon (one-blow victory)

Opponent is knocked down

Knock-down for less than 3 sec

Knock-down during 3-6 sec

Knock-down during 10 sec or the opponent's submission as a result of a painful or strangulation technique

Opponent is not knocked down

During 3-6 sec the opponent demonstrates the absence of desire to fight or misses one-sided blows

For 6-9 sec the opponent demonstrates the absence of desire to fight or misses one-sided blows

For more than 10 sec the opponent demonstrates the absence of desire to fight or misses one-sided blows

Comment 2: While revealing a winner when the sportsmen have the same quantity of points, yuko is less important than waza-ari or ippon, which have priority.

Comment 3: Turning back to the opponent deliberately in order to make the counter-attack impossible is considered as a violation.

  1. The retirement and/or disqualification are announced in the following situations:
    1. If one of the sportsmen is disqualified as a result of a violation, the other automatically becomes the winner;
    2. If one of the opponents does not come to tatami during 1 min after the call or has given a declaration of retirement in advance, the other becomes the winner.

The rules of points distribution and revealing the winner.

Comment: Two waza-ari marks count as an ippon mark. The scoring is made at the end of a bout, and the winner scores points (for the ranking list) according to his highest mark (yuko, waza-ari, or ippon victory).

  1. If one of competitors is harmed, and his injury is recorded by physicians or judges, the judges distribute yuko, waza-ari, or ippon points according to each fighter's behavior during the bout.

  2. In case of a disputable bout the final decision is negotiated by the people at the following positions:
    1. the president of jury,
    2. the chief referee on tatami,
    3. the referee on tatami.
    If it is hard to decide one more bout can be conducted during 2 min with 1 min break.

Comment 1: The major bout lasts 3 min.

Comment 2: The final bout is held to the clear victory (4 points, the opponent's retirement, or the bout's interruption by the referee) with no timing.

The rules violation:

  1. The first violation is qualified as "shido" (literally: "follow the rules"); the second one - as "tyui" ("attention"); the third one - as "gantan" ("points loss"), and the opponent gets yuko; the fourth - as "shikkaku" ("disqualification").

  2. The following cases are also identified as the rules' violation:
    1. all kinds of blows into neck, throat, or back of the head;
    2. the direct blows by hands or legs towards the lying opponent, though the side blows are allowed;
    3. the attack towards the opponent standing back;
    4. a more than 10 sec clasping hold of the opponent without any other technical actions or blows;
    5. stepping away from tatami;
    6. turning back to the opponent;
    7. face to face standing for more than 30 sec and do not fight;
    8. finger pokes and penetrating painful grips, as well as strangulation with the direct pressure on the larynx;
    9. locking techniques which can cause the spine break.

Comment 1: Locking techniques on fingers and hands, as well as the blows to the groin are allowed, but with the use of groin protectors and with the hands bandaged.

Comment 2: Besides the above, any actions, words, or techniques, evaluated by the judges as gross violations, are also included in this list.

Comment 3: All the blows and techniques not included in the list of violations are permitted.
